Three years after he vanished without a trace and with two million euros under his arm that he had defrauded his students in Barcelona, ??the trader Raúl Batres has been arrested at an airport in Mexico. The arrest occurred last Saturday and the Mexican authorities immediately informed the Spanish justice system. The Prosecutor’s Office has requested his extradition to face the judicial process opened for fraud that is being followed in the investigating court 3 of Barcelona, ??as reported in a press release.
Since August 2020, Batres was wanted and captured, as reported by La Vanguardia. He left Barcelona overnight, leaving 59 investors who had entrusted him with part of their savings in the lurch. Batres presented himself as a successful young man and led a life full of luxuries, Ferraris, motorcycles, expensive hotels, which he logically showed off to his students whom he taught at a center created by himself, the BCN Trading Academy. There he promised returns of 5% every three months thanks to a supposed investment fund created by himself that generated profits of 10 to 15%. None of that was true. The house of cards little by little fell apart and when he was unable to pay the debts he vanished, leaving a hole of 2.15 million euros.
Since then, the 59 affected people organized themselves and put themselves in the hands of lawyer José María Fuster-Fabra. They always suspected that Batres had taken refuge in Mexico, his country of origin, with a false identity but they were never able to confirm it. The search had always been fruitless. The court searched for the communications and telephone numbers that Batres could have used to see if he could be located, but all the companies responded evasively: more than a year has passed and we no longer have that information, they warned. All of his accounts were also reviewed. All were empty, including two that were found in Germany and Belgium. Those affected received the news of the capture of the scammer this Tuesday morning and hope that justice will finally be done for a case that had not progressed in the last three years, when Batres disappeared.
