The Irish Repertory Theatre celebrated its 35th anniversary last year with a tribute to Brian Friel, showcasing some of the best performances in town. This year, to kick off its 36th season, the company has chosen a play by contemporary Irish playwright Nancy Harris, titled “The Beacon.” Set on an island off the coast of West Cork, where Harris spent time during her childhood, the play delves into the complexities of a small community, much like the settings of Friel’s works.

The story revolves around Beiv, a renowned visual artist, who has moved to the island with her son Colm and his new wife Bonnie. As the family dynamics unfold, dark secrets from the past come to light, including the mysterious death of Colm’s father. Throughout the two acts, Harris and director Marc Atkinson Borrull skillfully build suspense, leading to a gripping conclusion that showcases the talents of the cast, especially the leading lady, Kate Mulgrew.

Known for her role in “Orange is the New Black,” Mulgrew delivers a powerful performance as Beiv, portraying a character filled with regrets, disappointments, and resilience. Colm, played by Zach Appelman, brings his own personal demons to the stage, with a strong performance that adds depth to the narrative. The supporting cast, including Ayana Workman and Sean Bell, also shine in their respective roles, adding layers to the story.

The scenic design by Colm McNally and sound design by Liam Bellman-Sharpe enhance the dramatic elements of the play, with the ocean serving as a metaphor for both danger and strength. As Beiv reflects on her relationship with Colm and the challenges they have faced, the play delves into themes of ruthlessness, resilience, and the importance of human connections.

Overall, “The Beacon” is a compelling exploration of family dynamics, secrets, and the complexities of relationships. Through powerful performances and a gripping narrative, the play captures the essence of Irish storytelling while offering a fresh perspective on contemporary themes. As the Irish Repertory Theatre continues to showcase diverse and thought-provoking works, “The Beacon” stands out as a highlight of their 36th season, honoring the legacy of great Irish playwrights like Brian Friel.
