The Barcelona neighborhood plan sets itself as a future objective to have a metropolitan scope

The Barcelona neighborhood plan is in its sixth year of deployment. The program focuses on promoting different measures to combat inequalities and generate opportunities in the 23 most vulnerable neighborhoods of the city, an initiative similar to the one promoted by the Generalitat tripartite. The plan began in 2017 in a first phase until 2020 and now the second is being executed from 2021 until next year.

Barcelona City Council has taken stock of the actions this Wednesday and has ensured that up to now it has directly reached 111,032 people – 30% of the population of the neighborhoods where it has acted – and indirectly 136,845, counting the families involved in the educational projects of the schools, as well as those of occupation and reconciliation.

During these two periods of the plan, the Consistory has invested 300 million and has promoted 1,167 actions with the forecast of reaching almost 1,400 in 2024. The bulk of the budget has been allocated to interventions in public spaces with 113 million euros, earmarked for improve children’s areas, pedestrianize school environments or the installation of escalators, among other actions. The second largest amount has been taken by projects focused on education and culture with 65 million.

In the field of social rights, 48 ??million have been dedicated, with actions such as the municipal babysitting service that has registered more than 3,000 user families since 2020. For its part, the housing section has received 43 million that have served to rehabilitate to date 86 farms. The plans to promote economic activity and generate employment have had a game of 31 million.

The Deputy Mayor for Culture, Education, Science and Community and the councilor for the neighborhood plan, Jordi Martí, stressed that this program “has already come of age and has demonstrated its effectiveness and efficiency”, but he hopes that in the In the coming years it can also be financed with contributions from the Generalitat as a result of the approval of a new neighborhood law. For Martí, this would make it possible to achieve the two great objectives of the future of this project, which would be “longer cycles” and “a metropolitan scope”, beyond the municipality of Barcelona.
