The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has recently updated the information about an upcoming heat wave that is coming in most of Spain, after the passage of the Patricia storm. This climatic phenomenon since it represents a marked change in the current meteorological conditions, characterized by milder temperatures than usual.
The Patricia storm had brought with it a notable drop in temperatures on the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. However, as of this Saturday, August 5, the country will experience a new period of increased temperatures, which is scheduled to begin on Monday the 7th and will probably last until Friday the 11th. The western Cantabrian and Mediterranean coasts will be the areas less affected by this episode of heat.
On Monday, the situation will begin to change with the entry of low pressures from North Africa. This phenomenon will favor the arrival of a very hot and dry African continental air mass, which will cause the thermal rises to continue in the south of the peninsula. The Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys could experience temperatures of up to 38°C.
During the following days, the increase in temperatures will persist, reaching 40-42°C in the southwest quadrant of the peninsula and 36-40°C in the northwest, even affecting areas that have had a cool summer, such as Galicia. On Wednesday, the thermal rise is expected to continue in areas such as the eastern Cantabrian Sea, even exceeding 42-44°C in the southern half.
Towards the end of the week, it is likely that temperatures will begin to drop in the north of the peninsula, although they will remain high in the rest. From that moment on, there is some uncertainty as to the evolution of the heat wave.
This period is not only characterized by high daytime temperatures; the nights will also be exceptionally warm. Known as tropical nights, the minimum temperatures could stay above 20°C and even exceed 25°C in the southern half, center and Mediterranean area.
