The State Meteorological Agency reports in a statement that in the coming days there will be a progressive rise in temperatures in much of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, due to strong insolation over a warm and stable air mass, giving rise to a episode of heat wave from Sunday that will affect the northeast quadrant of the peninsula and the basins of the large rivers. This situation will probably last until Wednesday the 23rd.

This Saturday the temperatures will begin to rise in the southwestern quadrant of the peninsula, extending the rises tomorrow to the rest of the Peninsula, except the southeast, the Andalusian Mediterranean coast and the Cantabrian Sea, where they will descend.

Thus, tomorrow it is likely that 38-40ºC will be reached in the middle of the Ebro, depressions in the northeast, south of the Pyrenees, extreme northeast of Catalonia, the Guadalquivir valley and western Andalusia, without ruling out that these values ??will also be reached locally at points of the Guadiana valley and low areas of the center of the peninsula. In addition, 36-38ºC will be reached in a general way in the interior of the peninsula, except in Galicia and the northwest of Castilla y León.

Monday and Tuesday will be the peak days of the episode. It is probable that 40ºC will be reached or exceeded in large areas of the southwestern and northeastern quadrants of the peninsula, and 36-38oC in the interior of the peninsula, Mallorca and southern Galicia, without ruling out that it will also spread to points in the southeast.

As of Wednesday there is a high uncertainty in the prediction: it is likely that the atmosphere will become unstable and showers and storms will occur in areas of the interior of the peninsula, which could produce a slight drop in temperatures in parts of the eastern half. However, temperatures will continue to be high, and it is likely that they will still reach 38-40ºC in the middle of the Ebro and northeastern depressions, as well as in the river valleys of the southwestern quadrant.

It is probable that the decreases will become general as of Thursday, more intensely in the northern half, which would put an end to the heat wave episode, although temperatures will continue to be high in the valleys of the southwest of the peninsula and in the depressions of the northeast.

The minimum temperatures will also be very high during the episode, with tropical nights, above 20ºC, and even above 23-25ºC, in points of the southern half, the central zone and the Ebro valley.
