Once the reader voting period has ended, the selection process of the six photographs that have received the most votes and that have moved on to the final phase of the election for the Best La Vanguardia Reader Photo of 2023 has been completed. .

A total of 16 photographs, the best of the twelve months of last year (in April and December, exceptionally, three stood out), were eligible to be chosen as the best of last year. Without a doubt, one of the most recurring themes in the images has been climate change and the problem of persistent drought. But there have also been human stories and even starring animals.

As a novelty this year and to guarantee that the Participation rules and the journalistic criteria of the newspaper are met, the six most voted photographs (the same reader could not have two or more photos in this last phase of the selection process) have gone to the grand finale on January 28, when, during a special edition of The Readers’ Debate on the set of La Vanguardia, the Best Reader’s Photo of 2023 will be chosen and announced.

Although the acceptance of the readers’ vote will be taken into account, the criteria that will prevail to choose the winning photograph will be above all photojournalistic. For this reason, during the course of the program, Xavier Cervera, head of photography at La Vanguardia, will evaluate the six finalist photographs and cast his vote on what, in the opinion of the newspaper’s photographers, should be the winning image.

At the same time, there will be a second vote, from the Participation section of La Vanguardia. And there will also be a third vote, from a representative of the readers, who will always be the winner of the Best Reader Photo from the previous year, in this case, Narcís Serrat.
