Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent
An arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent during a traffic stop in Vermont. Teresa Youngblut, 21, of Washington state, was charged with assault on a federal law enforcement officer, according to the FBI. The arrest came after bizarre details of the suspects’ movements were revealed in the arrest affidavit.
Surveillance on Suspects Reveals Concerning Behavior
Since Jan. 14, investigators had been conducting “periodic surveillance” on Youngblut and Felix Baukholt, a German national who was killed during the shooting. The suspects were reported as suspicious by someone staying at the Newport City Inn and Suites, where they were seen dressed in all-black tactical clothing with protective equipment. Law enforcement was contacted when Youngblut was observed carrying a firearm in an exposed-carry holster.
Unsuccessful Attempt at Interview Leads to Fatal Shooting
When authorities attempted to approach the suspects for a voluntary interview, they claimed to be in the area to look at purchasing property. Five days later, Youngblut and Baukholt were spotted in downtown Newport, Vermont, in tactical dress and carrying a handgun. On the day of the fatal shooting, law enforcement observed Baukholt wrapping cellphones in aluminum foil in a Walmart parking lot.
Details of Fatal Shooting Emerged
The fatal incident occurred when Border Patrol agents initiated a stop on the suspects under the pretext of an immigration violation. Gunshots were reported from the scene between 3 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Agents described that both suspects possessed firearms, with Youngblut firing a handgun towards a Border Patrol agent without warning. Baukholt attempted to draw a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Response from FBI and Law Enforcement
Special Agent in Charge Craig Tremaroli of the FBI Albany Field Office commended Agent Maland’s service and sacrifice, stating that the arrest of Youngblut demonstrates law enforcement’s dedication to bringing justice to those who assault public servants. The investigation continues as authorities work diligently to uncover the motive behind the fatal shooting.
The tragic killing of U.S. Border Patrol agent David Maland serves as a somber reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face in the line of duty. As details of the case continue to unfold, the community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant and honors his bravery in the face of danger.
