The Spice Girls are already part of musical culture. What is perhaps the best-known female pop group in the world for several generations is celebrating this year the thirtieth anniversary since auditions in 1994 brought them together for the first time, and they wanted to do it in a very special way: sharing an unreleased video precisely from that moment, which would end up changing the history of pop.
The video shows how the girls rehearse Wannabe, the song that they did not yet know would make them internationally famous. Laughing and joking while practicing song and dance, no one could imagine that they, who at that time were between 18 and 21 years old, were going to become a musical phenomenon.
“Today marks the 30th anniversary of the first Spice Girls auditions! What started in 1994 has become an incredible journey, far beyond what we could have ever imagined. Thank you to our fans for their support from day one “, they write in a message next to the video, from their Instagram profile.
The British group was formed 30 years ago, when music agents Chris and Bob Herbert had the idea of ??forming a female musical group, to provide a counterpoint to the Take That boys. A group of girls with their own personality and image, to attract both men and women. The girls become friends, infuse their personalities into the project and a new adventure begins with no clear goal.
Their idea hit the nail on the head: Spice Girls swept not only their country, but the charts around the world. Composed of Victoria Adams (Beckham), Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell (Horner), Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm; The band represented a true revolution from their first single, Wannabe.
Since the group’s formation in 1994 and the release of that first single two years later – which took home their first Brit Award just a few months later – the group have achieved nine UK chart hits and sold 100 million records. In addition, they managed to become the first British group to achieve a number one in the United States with their debut album.
Considered one of the most successful British groups of all time, they released two studio albums: Spice (1996) which made every girl want to be a Spice Girl; and Spice Up Your Life (1997) Their third album, Goodbye (1998) arrives after the departure of Geri Halliwell and now as a quartet.
In 1999 the group took a break and in 2001 their training ended, at least until 2007, the time of their highly successful world tour. The five women also made a special appearance at the 2012 London Olympics, which was followed by a new tour – this time without Victoria Beckham – of the UK and Ireland in 2019.
Currently, the five remain very close, each with their own projects. Geri Horner had success with her solo album, but today she dedicates herself to charitable projects and her work as a children’s writer. Victoria Beckham has established herself as a figure in the world of fashion with her own brand, Emma Bunton is a regular presenter on British radio and Melanie Brown settled in the United States and was the protagonist of some media scandals, including a controversial paternity case with actor Eddie Murphy. Melanie Chisholm is the only one still active in the world of music.
