The PSC maintained its hegemony in the Barcelona metropolitan area. With the exception of Badalona, the large cities in the conurbation of the Catalan capital will continue to be governed by the Socialists. ERC applied to change the historical trend, but failed. A densely populated territory where the extreme right of Vox breaks into various consistories and the PP resurfaces. Precisely the rise of right-wing and extreme-right forces makes alternative majorities impossible where the PSC did not achieve an absolute majority.
The popular Xavier GarcÃa Albiol swept Badalona with an incontestable absolute majority granted by 18 of the 27 councilors in the City Council. Undeniable success of the ‘Badalonisme’ campaign, which chose to hide the initials of the PP to focus exclusively on local issues, especially focused on the fight against the increase in crime and illegal occupations. A strategy that caught on with Badalona voters, who forgot the controversies over the Pandora papers and the case of the telephone antennas. After all, in Badalona there was an absolute debacle of the left-wing parties that had governed since 2021 with a four-party formula.
After a very difficult mandate, the socialist Núria MarÃn loses her absolute majority in l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. However, the also president of the Barcelona Provincial Council was only one councilor away from reaching it. In addition, the sum between the rest of the candidacies is impossible: the four ERC mayors and the three of l’Hospitalet en Comú will not agree with the four of the PP and the three of Vox, which are growing strongly. Cs disappeared from the map, as it also happened in other cities.
In Santa Coloma de Gramenet, the current mayor, Núria Parlon, obtained a new majority with 17 councilors, the same ones who catapulted her to the mayoralty in 2019. The mystery of the irruption of parliamentarian Gabriel Rufián only managed to increase one councilor, so that ERC added four councilors. On the other hand, Cs lost two councilors and was left with four, so Dimas Grajera’s party becomes the third force. On the other hand, Miguel Jurado’s PP regained representation with two councilors, the same ones that Vox reached.
In Sant Adrià de Besòs, an overwhelming victory for the PSC that Filo Cañete has led since 2021, reaching an absolute majority. The question of the change in the mayoralty by Joan Callau is clearly resolved in favor of the Socialists, who have continued to hold the mayoralty uninterruptedly since 1995. ERC lost two councilors and kept three, while the PP, which had lost all representation in the 2019, entered with force with three councilors, to the detriment of Cs, who lost all four representatives. The purple formation of En Comú Podem dropped to two, one less than in the last elections. Junts per Catalunya joined the debacle, which did not reach representation.
In Cornellà de Llobregat, Antonio Balmón maintained the absolute majority, although the PP and Vox entered the plenary session, obtaining three and two councilors respectively. Lluïsa Moret swept Sant Boi. And it is that in the Baix Llobregat the PSC continues with great strength. He loses the absolute majority in Gavà but will have no problem governing due to the irruption of the right and the extreme right. The same situation occurs in Viladecans. In the capital, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, they grow from six to eight councilors and they must agree to recover the mayoralty. Right next door, in Molins de Rei, the socialist Xavi Paz grew up and won for the second time.
Like a replica of Badalona on a small scale, Manuel Reyes’ PP grew strongly in Castelldefels and five parties will have to agree this time if they want to wrest the mayoralty from him again. In El Prat de Llobregat, where the PP and Vox entered with two councilors each, El Prat won again in Comú Podem. LluÃs Mijoler lost two councilors but can once again add an absolute majority with the PSC.
Martorell will continue with the absolute majority of Junts while in Sant Andreu de la Barca ERC, with the Fem Sant Andreu brand, snatched a socialist fiefdom
