The general secretary of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, praises in an open letter addressed to the militancy their “serene” attitude in the face of the “intolerable harassment experienced” at the party’s headquarters after the agreement with the Catalan independence forces regarding the amnesty. . “Coexistence depends more than ever on us, on a PSOE that does not allow itself to be dragged down the slope of expletives and intransigence,” says the first secretary of the socialist party.
Sánchez recognizes that the PSOE has experienced “hard moments” in 2023 such as the “intransigent and angry response with which the extreme right and the right accepted the electoral result and the continuity of the progressive project.” This response, he has regretted, was based on the “proliferation of insults and the intolerable harassment experienced at the doors” of the socialist headquarters.
The letter emphasizes that “polarization is not symmetrical.” “On one side, insults are uttered, on the other they are received; On the one hand, the siege is promoted, on the other we see ourselves besieged.”
The head of the executive replicates the analysis of Alberto Núñez Feijóo who has maintained in recent days that the PSOE is no longer a state party or a constitutionalist party. In this sense, Sánchez assures that the PSOE identifies “fully with the Constitution” which, he emphasizes, “is not an object to be raised against the opponent but rather a space for coexistence and welcome, even for those who are suspicious of the Magna Carta itself.”
In the letter and, facing 2024, Sánchez highlights the objectives of giving a new boost to well-being, economic growth and social justice with social democratic policies such as “those that have allowed us to close 2023 as the country with the most growth, with the most creation of employment and with the least inflation among the large economies of Europe.” In this sense, he points out the revaluation of pensions and the increase in the minimum wage, so that “it is never again below 60% of the average salary”, as one of the objectives to be achieved.
