Shakira has become one of the celebrities that is generating the most interest in recent months. And, despite re-emerging as one of the most successful artists of recent times, and of history, the Colombian is involved in a judicial network, from which it seems that she is already seeing the light.
Last Monday, the woman from Barranquilla went to the Barcelona Court to face the lawsuit she had with the Treasury after having defrauded 14.5 million euros between 2012 and 2014. Facts that she herself ended up accepting with a simple “yes.” After this, the singer has signed an agreement, in which she agrees to pay 7.3 million euros, and thus avoid the three years in prison that she is sentenced to.
“I have to choose my battles and the most important one for me now is to do everything so that my children live a full life and focus on what is really important: watching them grow and spending time with them, without subjecting them to the anguish of seeing their mother in a criminal trial with the wear and tear that entails,” the singer said in a statement, minutes after leaving the court.
But now it was his lawyer who wanted to offer a few words for the program El món a RAC1 and his words have not left anyone indifferent. “Shakira’s falling in love has cost her 120 million euros. If she had fallen in love with Sergio Ramos and not Piqué it would have been much cheaper,” Pau Molins, one of the lawyers who facilitated Monday’s agreement, made clear.
The lawyer has assured, among other things, that if the singer had not lived in Catalonia she would have been spared three of the six crimes of which she is accused, making it clear that it would not have happened in another community: “So much so that they fill their mouths with the equality of Spaniards… If you are a resident of Catalonia you can go to prison for a crime that is impossible for the same thing to happen in Madrid, because there is no estate tax.”
Although the Colombian accepted the charges, Pau Molins continues to defend her innocence. “It is a complicated issue with world artists. Where do they work if they are flying all day?” he assured. Likewise, he has reported that it is “complicated to determine where you have to pay your taxes” if he was on a tour of 74 countries.
He is so sure of his client’s innocence that he himself wanted to go to trial and go for it. However, it was she who decided that everything had to end. While he believes they could have won, “deontologically we have to respect the person’s will.” And Shakira has made it very clear that she does all of this for her children.
Finally, he pointed out that if the singer’s true intention had been to hide her income and not pay taxes, she would have been able to do so. For this reason, she emphasizes that Shakira has an “international business structure” for efficiency reasons and not to hide anything from anyone.
