Since they announced their breakup in June 2022, there has not been a month in which the details of the relationship between Shakira and Gerard Piqué have not been discussed. Agreements, disagreements, songs in which the Colombian makes it clear how she felt about the Blaugrana’s alleged infidelity with her current partner, Clara Chía… An endless number of messages and accusations that have ended up dynamiting what little cordiality that could have remained .

Many thought that the waters had settled after months of confrontation, but Shakira surprised everyone a few hours ago with the launch of her new single, El Jefe, about the abuse of power and with clear allusions to her former father-in-law, Joan Piqué. . She now opens up like never before in an interview with Billboard, where she talks about how she is living this new stage in Miami, after this heartbreak with the father of her children, Milan (10) and Sasha (8). .

The singer assures that in her current situation “it is difficult to achieve everything”, but she strives to achieve what is essential: the happiness of her two children.

“My priority was my home, my family. I believed in ‘until death do us part’. I believed in that dream, and I had that dream for myself and my children,” says the artist, who confesses that she has her own parents as a model. , who continue together and in love after more than half a century together.

“They have a love that is unique and unrepeatable, so I know it is possible,” insists the Colombian, who tried to achieve the same with Gerard Piqué. “It’s what he wanted for me and my children, but it didn’t happen.” Now, she assures that she has learned a valuable lesson from this whole situation: “If life gives you lemons, you have to make lemonade. That’s what I’m making: lemonade.”

The singer makes a special reference to one of her songs, Empty Cup, the single she released at the beginning of summer with Manuel Turizo. In the video that accompanies the song, Shakira transforms into a mermaid, fighting to escape a world to which she does not belong, something with which she identifies.

“The mermaid is a symbol that represents that part of me that was kidnapped and taken from the world to which it belongs to another world to which it does not belong; a world in which it has to make an enormous sacrifice to be,” he explains, making a simile with his life in Barcelona. “In the end, she returns to the sea because it is her destiny, just like I returned to Miami.”

The singer explains how the mermaid, with whom she identifies, was completely abducted by love, remained captive and locked up next to that man; sacrificing her own well-being and all that is natural to her for love. “And in the end, she ends up thrown in the trash and surrounded by rats.” The artist insists that she herself is “surrounded by rats,” and that for part of this year she has been “cleaning the house and exterminating the rats” that still exist around her.

Despite everything that has happened, Shakira is triumphing like never before. The Colombian assures that she is still not truly happy, but that her music is taking her to that point of total recovery. Of course, she will never be able to remember these months with joy. “Nothing can compensate for the pain of having destroyed a family.”
