Atlético continues to disengage little by little from the League. Sevilla, in one of the best games of a very discreet season, defeated them at the Sánchez Pizjuán and Simeone’s men are already thirteen points behind the lead, weighed down once again by their poor performances outside the Metropolitano.
This afternoon’s match turned very quickly for Sevilla, who came out focused and aggressive, as if they were risking their lives. The goal was scored from the first minute into Oblak’s goal, who immediately had to intervene twice to save shots from Navas and Acuña. In the 14th minute, Sevilla scored on a corner kick from Acuña, Ocampos headed in and at the far post Isaac Romero outjumped Koke and headed into the net.
Atlético’s reaction came the next minute in a header from Morata to the post, although it was offside, but there was not much more from the colchoneros in the entire first half except for a one-on-one between Morata and Nyland in the 40th minute, saved by the goalkeeper with one foot. Sevilla could have sentenced in that first period. He didn’t get it because Isaac was no longer successful and on his clearest chance for the double his shot went off the crossbar.
Before the end of the first half, Atlético lost Morata, injured in a jump with Soumaré. He left crying, with his knee damaged. The first part rules out a cruciate injury and speaks only of trauma with knee twisting.
In the second half, Depay came on for Morata and Molina came on for Barrios. As soon as it began, Jesús Navas avoided Griezmann on the line in the clearest chance for the colchoneros. That would be the tone of the second half, a harassment by Atlético with Sevilla standing behind, trying to go on the counterattack. Isaac had the second again but Oblak blocked his shot.
In the 68th minute, Sevilla asked for a penalty for Molina’s knockdown of Isaac. Nothing was whistled to the great annoyance of Sánchez Pizjuán. The game died in the Sevilla area, but Atlético had no clear chances, becoming increasingly confused and without ideas. With its victory, Sevilla moves a little away from the relegation zone. Atlético seems to have said goodbye to the fight for the League a long time ago. They have the Cup left, with the semi-final uphill after their defeat in the first leg (0-1) against Athletic, and the always unpredictable champions.
