The Egyptian Ministry of Environment reported that two women were attacked by sharks in Egypt’s Red Sea south of Hurghada.
Two sources confirmed to Reuters that a body belonging to a Romanian tourist, in her late 40s, was found hours after an attack on a 68 year-old woman from Austria. Sources say that both attacks occurred within 650m of each other off the coast Sahl Hasheesh.
In a statement, the ministry stated that a committee was established to investigate the circumstances and scientific reasons for the attacks.
It also stated that Major General Amr Hanafi (Gouvernor of the Red Sea Governorate) has given an order to stop all activity in the immediate vicinity of the attacks.
In recent years, shark attacks in Egypt’s Red Sea coast region have been rare. A shark attack caused the death of a young boy from Ukraine and the injury to a tour guide in Egypt. This happened in 2020. One European tourist was killed and several others were injured in shark attacks that occurred on Sharm el-Sheikh, Sinai Peninsula. It is located across the Red Sea from Hurghada.
The country’s most popular beach destination is Egypt’s Red Sea resorts. These include Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and other Red Sea resorts. Divers love the spectacular drop-offs in coral reefs offshore, which offer rich and colorful marine life.
