Here are the main developments as Monday nears its end in Moscow and Kyiv.
The United Kingdom has sent long-range missiles towards Ukraine, in defiance of Russia’s warning that it would bomb any weapons made by the West. British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace stated that the U.K. would deliver multiple-launch rockets systems capable of striking targets up to 50 miles away. This will help boost Ukraine’s capabilities against Russia. This announcement follows President Biden’s last week announcement that the United States would send Ukraine more advanced rockets, compared to previous shipments.
The United Nations Security Council met in Ukraine to discuss sexual violence in conflict. Pramila Patten, U.N. Special Representative for Sexual Violence, warned of a “humantrafficking crisis” and said that “Women fleeing conflict are being targeted to trafficking and exploitation aEUR”. In some cases, they may also be exposed to rape while seeking refuge.
Two planes, worth more than $400 million, were seized by the U.S. Justice Department. The U.S. Justice Department is now “actively seeking” the luxury jets that were made in America and will be called “tainted assets.” Officials from the Biden administration say that the planes were flown to Russia following changes in rules regarding such flights after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Ministry warned U.S. media outlets based in Moscow that they could lose accreditation. Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, stated that any Russian actions against American media would be a retaliation to the pressure faced by Russian journalists in the U.S. She claimed that Russian media have had problems in the past obtaining visas and broadcasting licences in the U.S. and now face harassment and blocked bank accounts. Andrei Soldatov (an investigative journalist who focuses on Russia’s security agencies) stated that he was placed on a Russian wanted list by Russian authorities and his bank accounts were frozen.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of the United States, made an unexpected visit to eastern Ukraine.
Artists in Ukraine’s National Opera house have forsworn Russian music.
The effectiveness of the most recent sanctions against Russia is being reduced.
