Russia today “strongly” condemned the bombings carried out by the United States against targets linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran and other Iranian groups in Iraq and Syria, and called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council. According to diplomatic sources, the meeting of the UN body will be held this Monday.
“We firmly condemn the new and flagrant act of British-American aggression against sovereign states,” Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maria Zajárova commented in a statement.
He added that Moscow is trying to get the Security Council to convene an urgent meeting to analyze the situation created in the Middle East after the Western attacks.
“It is clear that the airstrikes are designed specifically to further fuel the conflict. By recently attacking, virtually without respite, facilities of allegedly pro-Iran groups in Iraq and Syria, the US is deliberately attempting to plunge into a conflict to the largest countries in the region,” he stressed.
The Russian diplomat insists that these attacks demonstrate “once again to the entire world the aggressive nature of US policy in the Middle East and Washington’s total disregard for international law.”
The attack, according to Zajárova, has no justification and, in addition to causing the death of civilians, confirms that the US seeks to create “hotspots of tension” from Finland to the Suez Canal and from Libya to Afghanistan.
“Far from its own borders, closer to adversaries and, at the same time, to the loyal allies of NATO and the European Union,” he noted.
The United States claimed this Friday to have bombed more than 85 targets and facilities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard of Iran and pro-Iran groups in Iraq and Syria.
Washington thus responded to the drone attack a week ago in Jordan, near the border with Syria, carried out by pro-Iranian militias and in which three American soldiers were killed and 40 others were injured.
