Runaway Golf Cart Incident Leaves Woman Injured in Rossburg, Illinois

Rossburg – A terrifying incident unfolded on June 7, 2024, at Speedy Campground in Rossburg, Illinois, leaving one woman seriously injured. Darke County Deputies, along with Rossburg Fire and Ansonia Rescue, rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a woman struck by a runaway golf cart.

The preliminary investigation revealed that an EZ GO golf cart, owned by William Fields Jr. of Tilton, IL, suddenly took off while Fields was standing beside it. Despite his efforts to stop the cart, Fields was dragged to the ground as it continued moving. The driverless cart traveled approximately 25-30 yards before colliding with Jill Koontz, a 68-year-old woman from Mapleton, IL, who was seated in a lawn chair. The golf cart then crashed into a 2022 Freedom Traveler motorhome before a quick-thinking witness managed to turn it off.

Koontz received immediate assistance from bystanders until medical help arrived. She was treated by Ansonia Rescue on-site before being airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight. As of now, Koontz’s current condition remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the unexpected acceleration of the golf cart.

This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and vigilance, especially in recreational settings where accidents can happen unexpectedly. Our thoughts are with Jill Koontz and her loved ones during this challenging time.
