The socialist municipal group in the Madrid City Council has established its leadership on Tuesday, with the former minister and candidate on May 28 Reyes Maroto at the helm, while Enma López, mayor in the previous term and coordinator of the PSOE-M campaign, will be the deputy spokesperson.
Together with them, Pedro Barrero, another of the few socialist councilors who repeats in this mandate that started on Saturday with the investiture of José Luis Martínez-Almeida as mayor, will be the general secretary of the municipal group, while Enrique Rico, with a long career in the Madrid Assembly, he made the leap to Cibeles hand in hand with the PSOE where he would be the treasurer.
“Today we have constituted the leadership of the socialist municipal group, of which I have the honor of being the spokesperson. We are going to work to make a constructive and useful opposition to Mr. Martínez-Almeida, to be the government alternative in four years”, has indicated the municipal spokesperson in a statement sent to the press.
Reyes Maroto, who was Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism in the two governments of Pedro Sánchez, improved the electoral results of the PSOE on May 28, obtaining eleven councilors, one less than Más Madrid.
After the inauguration of José Luis Martínez-Almeida as mayor of Madrid, the socialist leader has criticized the structure of the new government for its “continuism” and its “lack of ambition to address the great challenges of the cities of the 21st century, such as the emergency climate change, digitization and social and territorial imbalances”.
Maroto has also focused on the lack of “youth policies despite the fact that they are the present and future of the city and the elimination of diversity from the organizational chart, having eliminated the ‘s’ in the Family Government area. In short, , Almeida has lost the opportunity for Madrid to advance in these four years”, he added.
