Authorities said Tuesday that the suspect in the murder of a retired Wisconsin judge died from a self-inflicted gunshot injury.
Douglas K. Uhde (56), was identified as the suspect in Friday’s shooting death of John Roemer (68), a former judge at Juneau County Circuit Court. Uhde was also found with self-inflicted wounds on the day of the shooting and taken to a hospital.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Roemer was declared legally brain dead and taken off life support Tuesday. He was found dead at his home in New Lisbon. Roemer was reportedly bound with zip ties, according to a senior law enforcement official.
Roemer’s house was contacted by deputies at 6:30 a.m. to report an armed man and that two shots had been fired.
The department stated that authorities tried to negotiate with Uhde while he was still at the house, but failed. Roemer was found dead by a response team at 10:17 AM. Officials said that a firearm was found at the scene. Uhde was found in the basement of his home with severe injuries.
According to records from Wisconsin Circuit Court, Roemer sentenced Uhde in 2005 to six years imprisonment for armed burglary using a dangerous weapon.
At a news conference, Josh Kaul, Attorney General, stated that Uhde “appears” to have had other targets but declined to name them.
He said that it appeared to be connected to the judicial systems. “At the moment, we don’t know of any evidence that suggests there is an active threat to other individuals. All other potential targets have been notified.
