It has not only been the pandemic, but also the Europeanization of Spain has made teleworking increasingly an option to consider. In Europe, 24% of the population teleworked in 2021, according to Eurostat data, well above the 15.3% that Spain had.

The fashion of coming to live in Spanish towns and cities and taking advantage of the cheaper prices and style of work has spread among European teleworkers from, say, the Netherlands, Sweden and Luxembourg—countries with higher rates of remote work. Mediterranean life.

But it’s happening here too. In the Community of Madrid, for example, 19.1% of workers already do so from home.

The figure is 14.1% in Catalonia and 11.9% in the Valencian Community, according to data from the last quarter of 2022 from the National Observatory of Technology and Society.

It is common, among these people, to rent out their usual home in the city, to obtain a good return, and move to more affordable locations with a slower pace of life.

The two Castillas and Extremadura bring together the towns with the cheapest rent in all of Spain. The provinces with the most, Zamora (€5.59/m²) and Ciudad Real (€5.86/m²), according to Indomio.

To give us an idea, an average apartment in Zamora of 75 m² would cost about €420 per month. In many towns in the province, the rent drops to €2.17/m². For the same example, we would pay about €163 for a rental per month.

Although the price of the inland towns increases as they get closer to the capital, there are still very affordable options in the municipalities of Toledo (€6.98/m²), Guadalajara (€7.49/m²) or Segovia (9. €65/m²), for example.

Prices, near the sea, tend to rise. But there are some exceptions.

In Andalusia, the province of Almería has some of the lowest prices on the coast. The town of Níjar, for example, very close to the capital, has an average rent of €5.35/m², about €400 per month for a 75 square meter apartment.

Continuing north, in the Region of Murcia we find towns with affordable prices: in San Pedro del Pinatar, on the shores of the Mar Menor, the average price is €5.97/m² or €448 per month.

Between Castelló and Tarragona there are also beautiful towns with prices lower than average. In Vinaròs, the first Valencian town in the north, the average rental price is €6.31/m², or about €473 per month. In the city of Castelló de la Plana, the price is €7.17/m², according to the same source.

Although the Balearic Islands generally have high prices, some towns in the east of Menorca have more affordable prices. Es Castell, for example, next to Maó, has an average rent of €5.90/m² or €442.5 per month.
