As Highland Park mourns, and survivors start their long journey to recovery, new details emerge about the victims of the Fourth of July parade shooting.
Parents and grandparents were the victims. Many were there with their families.
Stephen Straus, 88 years old, was the oldest victim. His niece claimed that her uncle was still working every day and called him a “gentle soul”.
Jacquelyn was once a teacher at North Shore Congregation Israel. Her nephew called her an island of solace who represented “love and acceptance of differences”
Nicolas Toledo Zaragoza, a father-of-eight from Mexico, was on a visit to his family in the U.S. His grandchildren described him as funny and adventurous.
Eduardo Uvaldo passed away at the hospital. He was with his loved ones on July 4.
Jackie Tapia, spokesperson for Uvaldo, stated that “He was a loving and caring father, grandfathers, great grandfathers.” He loved his wife.
Kevin McCarthy and Irina McCarthy have left behind their child, just 2 years old. Witnesses claim that Kevin McCarthy was shot and killed while protecting his son from the bullets of the gunman.
“He was saying “mommy, dadmy” so I returned up to search for his mommy and daddy and then I saw the scene. Gregory Ring found the toddler covered with blood at the scene and called it Carnage.
Gregory and Dana, his wife, took the boy home where he watched Mickey Mouse.
He was happy. He was fine. Gregory Ring said that he was playing with our smallest child.”
The Rings launched a desperate social media hunt for the family of the boy.
A detective arrived hours later and reunited the boy and his grandparents. CBS News reported that the Rings felt both grief as well as gratitude after they went to sleep that night.
