Carles Puigdemont lamented this Thursday the “demobilization” of the independence movement on the fifth anniversary of the unilateral declaration of independence (DUI) of the Parliament, an event that the independence movement has remembered with a very low profile and without acts called, unlike what happened October 1st. In fact, that declaration was in the preamble of a resolution and not in the operative part, so it had no legal effect.
In the opinion of the now MEP and president of the Consell de la República, a pro-independence entity located in Belgium, he has pointed out “the internal division” and the “deliberate neglect of the DUI in certain sectors of the pro-independence movement” as causes of the demobilization of sovereignty. “They have acted more effectively than the repression of the State itself in terms of demobilization and mistrust,” Puigdemont points out in a video broadcast by the Consell.
In addition, the former president points out that “the path of negotiation with Spain does not have any path, not even in the improvement of self-government.” As he stressed, the path of dialogue with the State “is not feasible” -“history and the present prove it to us every day”, for which he has sent a clear message: “We do not need to collect more frustrations trusting again in the word of a State that makes lies and breaches the only policy in relation to Catalonia”.
In addition, for Puigdemont the DUI “marked the beginning of a long and uncertain process that will only end when Catalonia is recognized as an independent State.” “The non-immediate application of the DUI does not annul its validity but rather forces us” to “deploy it”, either “from the autonomous or republican institutions”, he concluded.
