New York City Faces Extreme Cold Weather Alert

New York City emergency officials have recently issued a “Cold Weather Alert” as the region braces for a period of bone-chilling temperatures. With below-freezing wind chills expected to plummet even further into next week, residents are urged to prepare for the coldest air of the season.

Impending Cold Snap

Starting early next week, the tri-state area will experience a significant drop in temperatures, with Tuesday’s “feels like” temperatures predicted to dip as low as -7 degrees. The bitter cold is expected to linger, with wind chills in New York City potentially falling below zero, especially in Central Park where temperatures are forecasted to remain in the single digits or lower for an extended period of around 48 hours or more.

Emergency Response

In response to the impending extreme weather conditions, the New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM), in coordination with the National Weather Service, has declared a Cold Weather Alert. The New York City Department of Homeless Services (NYCDHS) has also activated a Code Blue, mobilizing outreach teams across all five boroughs to connect with the city’s most vulnerable residents and provide access to shelters. During a Code Blue, no homeless individual seeking shelter in New York City will be turned away.

Additionally, residents are encouraged to be vigilant and report any individuals they suspect to be experiencing homelessness and in need of assistance by contacting 311 via phone or mobile app to request outreach support.

Weather Outlook

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there is a moderate risk of hazardous temperatures in the middle of next week. The Storm Team 4 forecasts a gradual decrease in temperatures leading up to Tuesday, with a slight moderation over the weekend before the mercury plummets once more. It may not be until the following weekend that temperatures begin to rise back to more typical seasonal levels.

As New York City prepares to face the brunt of this frigid weather spell, residents are reminded to take necessary precautions to stay safe and warm during this extreme cold weather alert.
