The plenary session of the Valencia Provincial Council yesterday moved forward – with the favorable votes of PP and Vox and the abstention of Ens Uneix – a motion in support of the bous al carrer, presented by Vox, in which the corporation is urged to ” support” the celebration of these celebrations in “all its modalities”, as well as collaborate with the city councils to “value this tradition” in their respective municipalities.

The motion highlights the “popular roots” of the bous al carrer and the fact that “they are part of Valencian culture”, which is why their “equal treatment with respect to any other cultural activity” is claimed.

Both the PSPV and Compromís deputies voted against, so the casting vote of the president of the Provincial Council, the ‘popular’ Vicent Mompó, tipped the balance towards yes, as explained by the provincial institution in a statement.

During his speech, the Vox deputy, Sergio Pastor, defended that the bous al carrer are “one of the festive events with the greatest roots and traditional character of the Valencian people, which promote the economic activity of our province, multiplying the benefits by eight every euro invested and creating more than 3,100 jobs, and that also generate great ecological value to our territory”.

The second vice president of the Provincial Council, Reme Mazzolari, stated that the bous al carrer are “a hallmark of the Valencian people, with great implementation and popular acceptance.”

Carlos Fernández Bielsa, spokesperson for the PSPV, has justified his group’s refusal to support the motion, despite the fact that many town councils governed by his party support bullfighting celebrations in their municipalities, because “despite the fact that we defend the roots and tradition of these celebrations, we are not going to play into the hands of the extreme right nor are we going to whitewash them.
