Police shot and killed one person outside an elementary school in Alabama, where students were taking part in a summer program. Officials from the school said that it was a fatal shooting.

It took place in Gadsden near Walnut Park Elementary School, which is about 70 miles northeast from Birmingham.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the individual was “attempting forcible entry into Rainbow City patrol vehicles” and was stopped by a Rainbow City Police Department school resource officer.

“The subject refused to yield and tried to steal the officer’s gun. Additional officers from Gadsden Police Department arrived on the scene to assist. According to a news release, the subject was shot and injured.

During the incident, no children were hurt at the school.

Tony Reddick, Gadsden City Schools superintendent, described the individual as a “potential intrusion” and stated that the person tried to enter the school through the doors.

Reddick said that the principal was alerted to make sure that all doors were locked. Reddick said that the principal then called the school resource officer and confronted the individual outside.

“Next thing we knew, there was another officer who arrived to help and then whatever transpired, transpired thereafter. He said that he didn’t know too many details.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency didn’t immediately confirm that the individual tried to enter the school.

Reddick stated that 34 students attended the school to participate in a summer literacy camp. He said that all the students were reunited with their families.

“Our main concern was to make sure that no one is allowed in our building. He said that our children are safe.
