The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), virtual winner of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya after relentlessly winning three mountain stages, was involved in an incident rarely seen when he had just a few meters left to reach the Queralt finish line. The leader of the Volta was leading the race alone when he met two Mossos motorcycles that told him the pass. Angry at not being able to keep up with his impressive pace on the climb, he hit the motorcycle with his hand twice.
The motorcycles could not move at high speed in front of the large audience, while Pogacar was completely unleashed on his bicycle. The Slovenian tried to overtake them, but there was no space, so he hit one of the motorcycles to show his anger.
Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) explained, after winning the sixth stage of the race, that he made the decision to attack at the Collada de Sant Isidre when he saw that the Movistar team was trying to take advantage. “The group came together again (at the beginning of the pass) and Movistar tried to attack. I attacked in the final part of the pass and the rest is history. I descended calmly and the final ascent was very nice with all the people , but I have suffered a lot,” he summarized.
The Slovenian, who has a lead of 3:31 in the general classification over Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) from Alava, stressed that it was “a very hard stage”, although he considered that his team controlled it “from the beginning” .
“After the special climb (Pradell), Visma tried to increase the pace and it was very hard. At the top, we were left with ten cyclists with Marc Soler and Joao Almeida. We kept the pace until the next pass (Collada de Sant Isidre)”, he recalled.
