Podem and Esquerra Unida already have an agreement to go together to the regional elections of the next 28M. A pact that they intend to have its correlation in 50 other major cities such as Alicante, Elx, Castelló, Torrevieja, Paterna, Burjassot or Alzira. The idea, they have explained, is to be able to finalize the agreement next week in the cap i casal, which this Thursday was considered closed.

Both formations will compete in the regional elections with the new name of Unides Podem-Esquerra Unida (the EU wanted its name on the ballot). In the municipalities, the order may be changed depending on whether the candidate who leads the list is from one party or the other.

The agreement has a fairly equal distribution of starting positions. The purples remain number one for Valencia and the candidacy for the Presidency of the Generalitat, which will go to Vice President Héctor Illueca, as well as the head of the list for Alicante (María Teresa Pérez) and Castellón (Marisa Saavedra) while the EU access to the ‘doses’ of Valencia (it will be for its coordinator and councilor, Rosa Pérez Garijo) and Alicante (the deputy Estefanía Blanes). Esquerra Unida will also have three for Castellón, with few options to leave.

Regarding the possibility that the visible head of Sumar Yolanda Díaz participates in the campaign, the US coordinator recalled that Díaz is the second vice president of the Government for United We Can, so she completely rules out “that she come to campaign for Compromís” . For his part, the candidate for the Generalitat, Héctor Illueca, has indicated that he aspires to make it “a unitary campaign in which the whole world supports us” from Díaz to Alberto Garzón to Pablo Iglesias.

It has not been a simple negotiation, although it has been discreet, which has helped not to add fuel to the fire. During these weeks it emerged that the EU did not agree with the conditions offered by its partners who were trying to reissue a pact with the same bases as the 2019 agreement. In this EU it obtained number two for Valencia, three for Alicante and four for Castellon. A circumstance that made Podemos have six of the eight deputies who obtained minutes this legislature. The fact that now the prospects are less, forced the US to force the negotiation.

The agreement, despite being complicated, was key for both formations since several polls indicate that they do not have much cushion to overcome the 5% barrier necessary to continue in the autonomous Parliament. Separately, surely they would not have reached those approximately 130,000 votes necessary to have representation.

In addition, the continuity of this third leg of the Botànic is one of the keys (together with the mobilization of the left) so that the political change that began in 2015 can continue. If the coalition fails to exceed 5% and takes away a significant percentage of votes from its government partners, botanical continuity would be in danger. Instead, the entry of Podem and EU makes things easier for the left.
