This Monday, the King begins his round of consultations at the Palacio de la Zarzuela to propose the candidate for the investiture. The PNV spokesman in the Congress of Deputies, Aitor Esteban, will meet with Felipe VI. In interviews with Onda Vasca and Cadena Ser, Esteban has advanced that the king’s round of contacts with the parties is “a bit hasty.”
According to the PNV spokesman “there have been no minimal conversations to be able to discuss and prepare the investiture”, for which he points out that “little thing can be said to him beyond what he will have deduced from the media.” Esteban has commented that to determine “if there would be a real possibility of someone being invested”, perhaps one should “wait and do another new round”.
Aitor Esteban has assessed that Feijóo’s candidacy “has no chance of moving forward.” In the case of Sánchez, the spokesman has shared that he needs “a lot of filming” to be able to say that he is in a position to go ahead with the investiture. Esteban has indicated that the PNV and the PSOE have not yet discussed the investiture of the socialist and that “more time is needed.”
The PNV spokesman believes that Sánchez does not have the necessary support “right now” to be sworn in as president. “Maybe this needs some time to mature. That can’t be a ‘flash’ investiture,” he explained. Esteban has assessed that “hurrying up” does not lead to a successful inauguration and does not rule out a repeat election in less than six months.
Aitor Esteban has shared that the PNV has spoken with the Popular Party, by phone “as a minimum of courtesy” and has reiterated that there is no “way” to form a majority for which Vox is needed. “We already said that we are not going to have anything to do with that game, that path is closed,” he said.
The spokesman added, “there are some lines, some principles and we have made them clear.” Regarding what it can negotiate with Sánchez, the PNV waits to see if the general secretary of the PSOE, who has to take the initiative and explain “what it is that he wants to do throughout the legislature and how he is going to do it”.
The King will begin this Monday, August 21, his round of consultations to propose the candidate for the investiture and for the first time he will have to choose between two candidates: the popular Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the socialist Pedro Sánchez. The consultations will last two days since only seven formations will participate since ERC, Bildu, Junts and BNG have given up going through the La Zarzuela palace.
