Fashion is one of the most powerful non-verbal communication tools that exists and, in political matters, it can be decisive. How many times, leaders and deputies have caused a stir due to their peculiar clothing or even due to alleged communication errors when choosing a garment.
The brand or firm behind the set also plays a fundamental role, an aspect that can generate a certain social rejection in times of economic difficulty, as is the case in Spain after the rise in the cost of living.
Pedro Sánchez, president of the Executive and Alberto Núñez Feijóo, PP candidate for the presidency of the Government, attended the program presented by ‘El hormiguero’ to examine themselves before thousands of spectators.
Beyond the speech, which could have been more or less convincing, non-verbal language was under scrutiny by experts in the sector. The clothing of each one, once again, was analyzed to unravel the possible messages that they hid behind themselves.
Pedro Sánchez met with Pablo Motos and dressed in a buttoned-up cowgirl, with the sleeves rolled up, giving all the prominence to the bracelet with the LGTBIQ flag, a show of support and celebration of Pride month.
The doctor in Communication, political scientist and consultant in protocol, etiquette and image, Diana Rubio, analyzed the styling of the president and perceived a “change in the image of Sánchez”. She “he has left the president’s suit (status, formality) aside and has put on the denim shirt and a bracelet with the pride flag (citizenship, popular sovereignty, informality).”
Feijóo, who met with Motos the next day, appeared on the set of ‘El hormiguero’ with a sober gray jacket and an unbuttoned white shirt. An election that surprised and unbalanced in equal parts
“Feijóo is always spotless and with perfect suits. On the other hand, today he surprises us with this disheveled and unbuttoned image, contrary to the usual. The wrinkles on the jacket also take away attention from the message, ”he concludes.
