Brody Ridder (12 years old) had a yearbook that was almost empty when he returned from school. He only managed to get the signatures of two teachers, and two classmates, despite repeatedly asking for more.

Ridder signed his yearbook and wrote a note to himself, “Hope you make more friends.”

Cassandra Ridder Ridder told NPR that Ridder’s mom had reached a breaking point. The message her son sent to herself was a result of months of bullying at school in a Denver suburb.

“Parents must teach kindness to their children, and open that dialog. Talk to your child about what it could make you feel if they are being mean to someone else. Ridder suggested that you talk to your child about the difference between intent and impact.

Brody’s pain and hurt inspired her to send a message to the school’s parent Facebook group.

“My poor son. It doesn’t seem that things are getting better. His yearbook was signed by 2 teachers and 2 students. Brody asked all sorts of children to sign his yearbook. Brody decided to write it himself. I am devastated. Teach kindness to your children.”

Cassandra shared the post in May with her school community. She then posted it to her personal Facebook to update her friends. This was when support surged. Celebrities, families, children, and even parents reached out to Brody online and in person.

Paul Rudd, the Ant-Man character in the films Ant-Man and Avengers: Endgame, was one of those who saw Cassandra’s message. Rudd FaceTimed Ridder last week and left him a handwritten message:

Remember that life is not always easy. Things get better. Many people love you and consider you the coolest child in the world.

Brody was even given an autographed Ant-Man helmet by the actor.

Cassandra stated, “We put it into one of those little helmet covers.” “Now he stores it in his bedroom, and displays it. It’s so special to him.”

Brody is going through all the support that her family has received in the past few months. They continue to read letters sent to Brody. All of this support is a blessing for her son.

She is currently in talks to nonprofits working on anti-bullying initiatives, so she can continue spreading kindness and empathy.

After Brody’s mom posted on Facebook that he had returned to school, a group from older students visited Brody’s class and signed his yearbook. Cassandra stated that her son has been very positive and has appreciated the support.

Cassandra stated, “He’s just over the moon.” He is so happy. He is hopeful for next year. He is eager to meet new friends and put himself out there.
