Ouassim Oumaiz, Spanish 5,000 meters champion in 2023, has tested positive in a CELAD (State Anti-Doping Agency) anti-doping test carried out at the beginning of the year, according to Marca. The athlete was detected with GHRP-2, a substance that releases growth hormone, and he could be punished with a sanction of two to four years.
The substance for which he tested positive increases strength and muscle mass. The distance runner trains under Antonio Serrano at the Blume residence in Madrid, although he spends times of the year training alone outside of the group. The positive test comes just a few weeks after Spaniard Mohamed Katir was banned for four years for skipping three anti-doping controls.
The long-distance runner from Nerja, born in Morocco, has the Spanish record for 5,000 meters on the road (13m19s). Oumaiz has been standing out for years in the lower categories of Spanish athletics. He holds the sub-23 record of 3,000 meters indoors (7m44s39), 5,000 meters outdoors (13m13s14) and 10 kilometers on the road (28m35s).
In 2023, Oumaiz competed in his first outdoor World Cup in Budapest, where he finished sixteenth in the 5,000 meter event. He also stands out in cross country, a modality of which he was champion of Spain in 2019. In the 2018 European under-20 cross country competition he won silver against the winner of the event and current Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
