After Paris and Belgrade, the president of China, Xi Jinping, concludes his European tour in Budapest, where yesterday he was received with military honors, in a visit – the first by a Chinese president to Hungary in 20 years – considered “historic” by the Government of Viktor Orbán.

The ultra-nationalist Hungarian president has cultivated relations with Beijing and has turned his country into the largest recipient of investment from the Asian country in the region. In addition to the economy, Orbán and Xi share a vision on international affairs, such as their analysis of the war in Ukraine, in which they have shown understanding with the invasion launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with whom they have a friendly relationship.

This harmony was also highlighted by Xi in a laudatory article published yesterday in a pro-government Hungarian newspaper: “In an international environment with great changes, we defy difficulties and without being intimidated by violence, we have taken the right path with independent and friendly foreign relations. autonomous between sovereign countries.

Hungary will assume the presidency of the EU Council starting in July, and Beijing hopes that this will bring Europe closer to China.

Although it has not been officially confirmed, the local press has anticipated that during his stay in Budapest, Xi could announce a major investment project in the Central European country, possibly related to the manufacturing of electric cars.

At the end of last year, the European Commission launched an investigation into possible unfair competition from Chinese electric cars.
