On a short excursion near the mouth of the Algar River, in Altea, you can come into contact with the rural environment, as reflected in this photographic report in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.
The river, the sheep that come down to graze, a banana tree with bananas, the first persimmons and some chickens that ran after us in case we had food for them were some of the scenes we encountered.
One option is to follow a circular route of about 3.5 km, without slope, of little difficulty, which runs along both banks of the river and along dirt roads suitable for walking and cycling.
The mouth of the Algar River is a coastal wetland with a high ecological value and whose properties make it a unique place in the Marina Baixa.
Its ethnographic and historical heritage stands out, but especially the area’s strong interest in birds, since it is a key point during their annual migrations. Not in vain in the Algar River we can observe more than 100 species of birds.
The Algar River also presents enormous botanical wealth, highlighting the formations of tamarinds, sargas and poplars, as well as reeds and other aquatic species.
