A 20-year old woman was killed when she was pushing her 3-month-old child in a stroller in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The slaying was connected to the arrest of a suspect Friday.
New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell stated Wednesday at a press conference that the victim was pushing the stroller and when a man approached, he “fired one shot into her head from very close range” before fleeing. The toddler was not hurt.
Sewell stated that the victim was taken to hospital, where she was declared dead within an hour. On Thursday, the victim was identified as Azsia Johnson, 20, of Staten Island.
Ebony Paulin, a family friend, said that Azsia did not deserve it. “I don’t believe anybody would want to hurt Azsia, she’s a good person,” Ebony Paulin said.
Sewell reported on Friday evening that Isaac Argro (22-year-old) was taken into custody for murder and criminal possession with a weapon in relation to the shooting.
Sources told CBS New York that they did not believe the shooting was random and considered the father of Argro, a 22-year old man with a criminal history, a person of concern. The police did not immediately confirm if Argro is the person of interest that they were seeking.
CBS New York sources told CBS that surveillance video had been obtained by detectives of Johnson’s meeting with his father prior to the shooting.
At Wednesday’s news conference in New York City, Eric Adams, the Mayor of New York City, spoke out about the “problem with the over-proliferation and proliferation of guns on our streets.”
Adams stated that Adams was shocked to see a woman pushing a baby carriage down a block and being shot at point blank range. This shows how the national problem is affecting families. It doesn’t matter where you live, whether you are in Brooklyn, East New York or the Upper East Side. People are at risk from the oversaturation with guns
