Arrests Made in Connection with Looting and Arson in Los Angeles County Wildfire Zones

In a shocking turn of events, nine individuals have been charged with looting homes in evacuation zones amid the wildfires raging in Los Angeles County, including an arson suspect. The charges were announced by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman during a news conference on Monday. The accused individuals were seeking to exploit the tragedy for their own benefit, engaging in looting, arson, and other illicit activities, according to Hochman.

Residential Looting Incidents and Arrests

Three suspects, identified as Martrell Peoples, Damari Bell, and Travon Coleman, were implicated in residential burglaries in Mandeville Canyon, making off with goods worth over $200,000 shortly after the fires began. The trio was caught on a Ring camera inside a home and later apprehended in Koreatown, where stolen items were recovered. Peoples, a repeat offender, faces a potential life sentence under California’s Three Strikes Law, while Bell is looking at 22 years behind bars.

Additional charges were brought against Rudy Salazar and Lucia Jilrara Perez, who were accused of first-degree residential burglary in connection with looting in Altadena during the Eaton Fire. The duo was caught entering homes and subsequently arrested.

A third group of looters stole items from a home in Altadena, including an Emmy Award, which was later recovered. The suspects were identified as Roy Sims, Ryan Sims Quan, Naquan Dewey Reddix, and Pierie Obannon.

Arson Suspect Apprehended

The arson suspect, Jose Carranza-Escobar, was arrested for attempting to light a large fallen tree on fire at Pioneer Park. He was seen next to the flames and admitted to starting the fire during the investigation. Escobar is facing nine years in prison and was expected to be arraigned on Monday.

Law Enforcement Response and Arrests

Law enforcement agencies have been vigilant in preventing further criminal activities in evacuation zones. In Santa Monicia, at least 10 burglary suspects have been arrested since the start of the Palisades Fire, with officers able to intercept burglaries before they occurred. A total of 39 arrests have been made in evacuation zones, with suspects facing charges ranging from burglary to curfew violations, drug possession, warrants, and probation violations.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna emphasized a strong message that law enforcement is actively patrolling the areas and will not tolerate criminal behavior. The arrests made so far have included individuals carrying guns, narcotics, and violating curfew orders, none of whom were residents of the affected areas.

The authorities have made it clear that criminal activities during a natural disaster will not be tolerated, and stringent legal action will be taken against those seeking to exploit vulnerable communities. The safety and security of evacuees remain a top priority for law enforcement officials in Los Angeles County.
