Ángel Torres, vice president of the CNMC, dies at the age of 70

The vice president of the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC), Ángel Torres, has died this Saturday, August 19, at the age of 70, as reported in a statement by the CNMC.

With a long history of public service in the Ministry of Economy, Torres was number two in the organization since June 2020. He presided over the Regulatory Supervision Chamber, which handles matters related to energy or telecommunications, among other regulated sectors.

The CNMC has highlighted that during the three years of its mandate, the institution “has had the privilege of having its great professional category, unsurpassed technical background, ability to combine positions and its unmatched vocation for public service.”

“His strategic vision has been key in these years to address the regulation of complex sectors such as energy, telecommunications or transportation, among others,” underlines the CNMC.

Born on July 14, 1953 in Barcelona and graduated in Economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1976, Torres had belonged to the Higher Corps of State Commercial Technicians and Economists since 1979. He was executive director of the International Monetary Fund and the Bank Group Mundial, in Washington D.C., Economic and Commercial Counselor at the Permanent Representation of Spain at the OECD, in Paris, and Chief Counselor of the Economic and Commercial Office at the Spanish Embassy in Rome.

In the Spanish Public Administration, he held the following positions, among others: General Secretary for Economic Policy and Defense of Competition, General Director of Economic Policy and General Director of Planning at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Deputy General Director of Studies and Head of the Balance of Payments Service in the Secretary of State for Commerce, and deputy director and advisory member of Multilateral Financial Institutions in the Secretary of State for Economy and Business Support.

The CNMC highlights that the entire professional career of Ángel Torres “has been presided over by serving the general interest of our country, a vocation that has formed an integral part of our institution during these last three years.”

Many have shown their sadness at the news of his disappearance and have conveyed their condolences to the family, including Nadia Calviño, Vice President of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation of the Government.
