New Jersey’s 2025 Transportation Fee Changes

New Jersey residents are in for a financial hit this year as transportation fees across the state see significant increases. From a rise in gas taxes to toll hikes and the implementation of congestion pricing, commuters will have to dig deeper into their pockets to travel within and around the Garden State.

Gas Tax Increase

Effective January 1, 2025, New Jersey’s gas tax rate surged by 2.6 cents per gallon. This move, as explained by the Department of Treasury, aimed to bolster the State’s Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) program. Consequently, the state’s gas tax now stands at 44.9 cents per gallon, marking a 6% increase. State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio clarified that this adjustment was necessitated by a statutory target of approximately $2 billion, prompting a review under a new law to meet the revenue demand.

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.067, surpassing New Jersey’s average of $2.915.

Toll Hikes on Bridges and Tunnels

In a bid to enhance infrastructure funding, the Port Authority declared new toll rates effective starting January 5. Commuters entering New York via the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, George Washington, Bayonne, and Goethals bridges, as well as the Outerbridge Crossing, will witness a $0.68 increase. Those utilizing EZ-Pass will now pay $16.06 during peak hours and $14.06 during non-peak hours.

Congestion Pricing Toll

Beginning January 5, drivers heading to Manhattan’s Central Business District (CBD) may face additional toll charges under congestion pricing. This fee, applicable from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, will cost most vehicles $9 daily with an E-ZPass. Overnight rates drop to $2.25, while non-E-ZPass holders will incur higher fees of $13.50 during peak hours and $3.30 overnight. Motorcyclists will pay half the car rate during peak times, with buses and trucks subject to varying charges based on size.

Turnpike and Parkway Toll Escalation

The advent of 2025 ushered in a 3% toll increase on the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, and Atlantic City Expressway. Notable adjustments include a 10-cent rise in cash prices at certain Parkway plazas, with E-ZPass users retaining discounts. Turnpike tolls at key interchanges will climb by cents, while main and ramp plazas on the Parkway will experience incremental hikes. This marks the fourth consecutive year of a 3% toll escalation on these major roadways.

PATH Fare Adjustment

Come January 12, 2025, PATH riders will face a fare hike from $2.75 to $3 for a single ride. However, existing multi-trip and discounted fares will remain available with suitable modifications. The last single ride fare adjustment occurred in October 2014, over a decade ago. Additionally, fare options for 2025 will vary across different payment methods and pass types, catering to diverse commuter needs and preferences.
