A good night’s sleep is not only important for physical regeneration. While we sleep, vital processes also take place in the body. These include strengthening the immune system, removing metabolic waste products and producing cell renewal hormones.

Many people tend to have a certain habit in bed, which, however, compromises cleanliness.

According to a study by the British mattress retailer “Mattressnextday”, wearing socks in bed is not only unhygienic, but can even lead to health problems.

For the study, samples were taken from socks that the participants had worn from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the same day. Laboratory analysis showed that half of the socks contained bacteria of the species “Pseudomonas aeruginosa.” These are typically found on the floor, on doormats or in the droppings of cockroaches.

These bacteria can cause skin rashes, urinary tract and respiratory diseases, and even pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems.

The results were also compared with swabs from a remote control. The result: the test subjects’ socks were significantly dirtier than a remote control – which, according to numerous studies, usually contains more bacteria than a standard toilet.

However, wearing socks to bed can also have many benefits. For example, it can reduce hot flashes and night sweats, help you fall asleep faster and sleep longer, and even improve your sex life in bed.

But you should put on fresh socks. Socks made of natural fibers, such as cotton, are particularly suitable. These conduct excess heat well to the outside, do not insulate and are breathable.
