Monday with white roofs… and it's not because of the snow

Monday of white roofs in Osona and it was not precisely because of the snow, but because of the hail, after an impressive hailstorm was recorded today in Torelló, with records of 14 liters of water. In the photographs that I show in The Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia you can see how the urban landscape of this town has turned out.

Hail is manifested by ice particles up to 5 mm. It is usually spherical, transparent or translucent and does not break when falling to the ground. Hail can leave the landscape completely white, as we see on the roofs of the houses in Torelló.

Even great thicknesses can accumulate, as seen in some of the images. We speak of a stone when the ice grain exceeds 5 mm in diameter and a large stone when it is more than 2 centimeters.

Rains with hail are usually short-lived, between 5 and 10 minutes, and affect a fairly limited area; in this case, it has been noted in Torelló and the surrounding area.

Hail can occur at any time of the year, but especially in spring and summer, between the months of April and September. In the case of Catalonia, the months with the highest probability of hail are May and September.
