MEXICO CITY — According to electoral authorities, the party of Mexican President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador won four of six governorships by ballot in local elections.
National Regeneration Movement, also known as Morena, won with its allied parties in Tamaulipas and Quintana Roo on Sunday. A coalition of opposition won in Durango and Aguascalientes.
These victories gave Morena control over 22 of Mexico’s 32 state, an important advantage going into the 2024 presidential election.
Patricio Morelos from Monterrey Tech university, said that Morena has 22 governorships and is well-evaluated as a president.
Lopez Obrador is a popular figure in Mexico, while the opposition to him has been losing ground and floundering. Lopez Obrador is responsible for so much of Morena’s success that it is difficult to believe the party will survive after his term ends. He has stated that he will be retiring from politics.
Mario Delgado (Morena’s president) said that “It’s a historic day in ‘Obradorism’.” “We keep moving forward and the people continue to confirm with their votes that it is an honour to be with Obrador.”
