The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) would have reached an agreement with the architects of Barça women, former sports director Markel Zubizarreta, to take charge of the technical direction of the Spanish women’s soccer team, after the departure of Jorge Vilda, according to presented the Tot Costa sports program, and will be accompanied by Gonzalo Rodríguez (Badajoz, 1995), according to El Periódico.
Pedro Rocha, president of the RFEF, would have trusted the tandem that made Barça two-time European champions to lead the new stage of the women’s section of the federation after the initial discomfort among the players with Montse Tomé, for giving continuity to the management of the previous address of Luis Rubiales.
Markel Zubizarreta (Mondragón, 1985), left Barça in September when he had a contract until June 30, 2024. He entered the women’s team in 2015 as head of sports management and, in the summer of 2017, he became general team manager. With him at the head of the structure, the Barcelona team has become a world reference, with a total of 16 titles, with 4 Leagues, 2 Champions Leagues (2021 and 2023), 4 Queen’s Cups, 3 Super Cups and 3 Catalunya Cups.
The last renewal that Zubizarreta – the eldest son of the legendary Basque goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta – undertook before closing the door of his office was that of Patri Guijarro, the heroine of the Champions League final, the player who balances everything, but there were eight more left : Alexia Putellas, Mapi León, Sandra Paños, Lucy Bronze, Mariona Caldentey, Gemma Font, Marta Torrejón and Asisat Oshoala.
