Madrid will use mango-scented asphalt in a pilot project to improve some streets

The asphalt operation has started in Madrid in 2024 with some new features. The City Council of the capital is going to improve the asphalt of 323 streets in the 21 districts, which represent an area of ??930,000 square meters, and in some of the streets, as a pilot experience, flavored asphalt will be used.

The budget for paving the streets rises to 16.4 million, but the Madrid council recognizes in a press release issued yesterday that the use of these aromas does not increase the price of the works.

These aromatized asphalts are being developed by the company Padecasa, winner of one of the road renovation lots, in collaboration with the Alfonso X el Sabio University and Kao Chemicals Global.

On Jazmín Street, where Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida attended yesterday, together with the delegate of works and equipment, Paloma García Romero, and the councilor of Ciudad Lineal, Nadia Álvarez, is where the pavement has begun to be renewed with that technique.

The council explains that the smell used on Jazmín Street “is mango.” And the objective is, in Almeida’s words, “to try to minimize the inconvenience that arises as a result of these repair and maintenance works.” In addition, the aim is to “refine the technique and analyze the durability of the aroma over time based on different factors such as the type of aroma itself, the passage of traffic, temperatures, the effect of water, the typology of the streets. ..”

For now, it will be tested on some streets and depending on the results it will be applied to other roads.

In the total 2024 asphalt campaign, which affects 930,000 square meters, 110,000 tons of asphalt mixtures will be used, most of which will be more sustainable than traditional hot materials.
