Lazkano, champion of Spain after beating a lonely Ayuso

Oier Lazkano (Movistar) was proclaimed Spanish road cycling champion this Sunday, after completing in first place a 178-kilometre route and 3,150-meter drop starting and finishing in the Madrid town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

The 23-year-old cyclist from Alava led the exhibition in the Movistar race. He attacked with 26 kilometers to go and reached the last few meters alone with a six-second advantage over Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and his teammate Alex Aranburu.

“I was having cramps in the last ten kilometers. It was a fight simply for the pain and suffering to end as soon as possible,” said Lazkano at the end of the race, who showed “immense gratitude to all the teammates. We had to isolate the rest and be the majority. Anyone could win,” he confessed.

The route faced by the cyclists started from the Lonja de San Lorenzo de El Escorial and crossed the municipalities of Valdemorillo, Navalagamella, Villanueva de la Cañada and Quijorna, with the main obstacles of the ascent to Alto de la Cruz Verde and the Forest de la Herrería, an area protected by National Heritage.
