This Thursday, July 13, the deadline to request a vote by mail for the general elections on Sunday the 23rd. Once the voters process the vote by post, they will have until Thursday the 20th (the Electoral Board has extended the deadline by one day). to vote by certified mail from a Post Office.

Citizens who want to vote by mail need to request the Certificate of their registration in the corresponding Electoral Census. The certificate can be obtained in two ways, either electronically, by completing an application on the Correos website, or in person at a Post Office. Voters who vote by mail, online, have to identify themselves with the natural person certificates recognized by the Ministry of Industry and the electronic DNI.

Once the request is made, the voter will receive at home an envelope with the ballots for each political formation, the certificate of registration in the census and another envelope with the address of the polling station where they should vote. The Electoral Census Office began sending the documentation on July 3 and it is expected to end on Sunday the 16th.

From then on, voters will have until the 20th to cast their vote at a Post Office. In addition to the envelope, as a novelty for these elections, voters must carry their DNI or another similar document to identify themselves and be able to send the ballot by certified mail free of charge. This is so due to the new regulations implemented by the Central Electoral Board to prevent fraud in voting by mail such as those allegedly occurred in Melilla in the last elections on May 28.

In the event that the voter cannot go in person to deliver the documentation, he must grant an authorization for another person to deposit it, accompanied by a photocopy of the DNI and signed by himself. Correos will keep all the envelopes received until nine in the morning on election day, when the polling stations will open, at which time they will be sent to the polling stations. The correspondence that continues to be received that day will be transferred to the schools until the end of the day at 8:00 p.m.
