Justin Bieber shared his reasons for taking a break from performing on Friday, telling his Instagram followers that it was because he has been diagnosed as having Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the syndrome occurs when a shingles-like outbreak damages the facial nerve in one of the ears. Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which can lead to facial paralysis or hearing loss in an affected ear, is a condition that causes shingles-like symptoms.
The virus that causes chickenpox can cause Shingles and Ramsay Hunt. The syndrome is common in people who have had chickenpox as children.
Bieber described the virus in his video as “virus that attacks my nerves in my ear, and my facial nerves and has made my face paralyzed.”
He said, “As you see, this eye does not blink,” and pointed to his face in the video. “I cannot smile on this side.” This nostril won’t move. This side of my face is paralysed.”
A spokesperson for the singer didn’t immediately respond to a request.
Bieber, 28 years old, announced earlier this week that he would postpone a few shows because of a continuing health problem.
In an Instagram video, he addressed his frustration with the cancellations of the show to fans.
He said, “I’m physically not capable of doing those things.” As you can see, this is very serious. I wish that this was not the case. My body is telling me to slow down. I hope you guys understand.”
Bieber stated that he will use the time to relax and rest. Bieber said that he has been practicing facial exercises to get his “face back on track.”
“I need to get some rest so I can get my face back where it belongs. You guys are so patient with me, I love you. I’m gonna get better.”
