ERC, with the general elections called and after the loss of votes in the municipal elections on Sunday, wants to strengthen the discourse of independence unity and the first major decision revolves around the city of Barcelona. The president of the Republicans, Oriol Junqueras, has indicated today that the “best thing for the city is that there be a mayor linked to an independence party, committed to amnesty and self-determination.” In this way, the ERC leader indicated the intention of his party to support Xavier Trias as the next mayor.
In a press conference held in the Parliament, Junqueras has raised the need to push the pacts of the pro-independence formations in all the municipal and supra-municipal institutions that will have to be formed in the coming weeks. When referring to Barcelona, the president of ERC recalled the formulas that were used to veto Ernest Maragall as mayor four years ago, when Manuel Valls joined his votes with the commoners and socialists to make Ada Colau mayor.
In fact, Trias and Ernest Maragall began discreet contacts on the same election night, as this newspaper reported. And they continued them the next day when Pedro Sánchez called the generals, disrupting the political pulse and the strategies in the pacts. ERC has opted today for an entente in the agreements that takes into account the entire Catalan local framework.
