The governments of Jordan and Turkey applauded this Wednesday the decision of Spain, Ireland and Norway to recognize the State of Palestine, measures that will materialize on May 28 and that have provoked immediate condemnation by Israel, in the midst of the conflict that has been unleashed. in the Gaza Strip after the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, praised the announcement during a press conference with his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjárto, and highlighted that it represents “a confirmation on the path towards peace and the two-state solution”, according to a series of messages published by his portfolio through his account on the social network X.

“The decision is important and we hope that it is part of a broader solution,” said Safadi, who also expressed his desire that “other countries join Spain, Norway and Ireland in recognizing the State of Palestine.” .

For its part, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has applauded the announcements and has stressed in a brief statement published on its website that “the recognition of Palestine is a requirement of International Law, justice and conscience.”

“It is an extremely important step in terms of restoring the usurped rights of the Palestinian people under occupation and achieving the status that Palestine deserves in the international community,” he said, while announcing that Ankara “will continue to make efforts so that more countries recognize to Palestine.”

The announcements by Spain, Norway and Ireland – which have led Israel to call its ambassadors in these three countries for consultations – bring to 146 the number of United Nations member states that recognize the State of Palestine. Malta and Slovenia have also stated that they could take this step soon, while Israel has criticized all these decisions and has stated that they will have a negative impact on the region.

Over the past month, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the Bahamas had taken the step of recognizing Palestine, five years after Saint Kitts and Nevis did the same. Israel has been very critical of these decisions and has refused to recognize Palestine, distancing the possibility of an agreement.
