The president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, announced this Wednesday at an event held in Galicia – and later with a tweet – his resignation as head of LaLiga in order to be able to bring forward and call new elections in the football employers’ association. Tebas’ mandate ended on December 26, so this strategy means advancing the entire electoral procedure by one month. The details will be provided by LaLiga in a statement that will be made public in the next few hours.

The Spanish lawyer entered the position in 2013 and could have his fourth term at the head of Spanish football this year by way of re-election. Tebas’ intention is for the LaLiga elections to be held before the end of 2023 and, therefore, to avoid overlapping with those of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) which will take place in the first quarter of 2024.

The two vice presidents of LaLiga, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín and Quico Catalán, will provisionally lead the employers’ association pending the configuration of the Electoral Commission that will be configured this afternoon.

In it, representatives of five clubs will be chosen by lottery before a notary (three from the First Division and two from the Second) who will be responsible for the executive capacity of LaLiga to ensure transparency in the electoral process, as explained in the statutes. of the competition.

The former president of Eibar, Alex Aranzábal, has been the only opponent of Javier Tebas in the latest LaLiga electoral processes. However, Aranzábal did not obtain the 11 endorsements necessary in 2016 to formalize his candidacy. In 2019, a period in which Tebas also had no opponent, he was again proclaimed president just 21 days after he submitted his resignation.

The employer’s representative will also need 11 endorsements to make his next proposal. A factor that is not expected to be an inconvenience for the lawyer. In the event that someone presented themselves to form an opposition in the following elections, the clubs would have to decide on one candidate or another, without the possibility of supporting or endorsing both.
