Iron Age and Roman tombs found in L'Escala

The latest excavation campaign at the Vilanera site, in L’Escala, has closed with relevant findings. On this occasion, new tombs have been excavated from the final bronze and early Iron Age cremation necropolis.

The most relevant aspect of this campaign, which has been carried out between the months of December and January, has been the discovery in one of the tombs, embedded in a grave excavated in the subsoil, of a funerary complex made up of a significant number of ceramic glasses.

In another of the tombs an “exceptional” funerary set has been found, with pieces of Phoenician origin, arrived through trade, in the 7th century BC. C. A cremation tomb, probably for children, from Roman times, from the 2nd century BC, has also been found for the first time in this sector. c.

It is the first time that funerary evidence from this period has been found in the necropolis of Vilanera.

The materials recovered in this latest campaign are pending internal excavation, work that will be carried out in the laboratory of the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya (MAC) in Empúries, which will also deal with their subsequent restoration.
