The Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, recalled that the new Law on sexual rights and reproductive rights recognizes surrogacy — “which is not legal in Spain” — as “a form of violence against women.”

“Never forget the women behind you, there is a clear discrimination bias due to poverty. Do not forget that it is a practice that is not legal in Spain, that it is recognized in our country as a form of violence against women” , Montero has sentenced.

This was stated this Wednesday by the Minister for Equality in statements to the media in the Congress of Deputies, in reference to Ana Obregón’s decision to become a mother by surrogacy in the United States.

In this context, it has warned that women who give birth by surrogacy are “precarious women” who are “in a situation of poverty and absolute precariousness.”

“It is regulated, it is a practice that is not legal, its advertising is also prohibited and the new law recognizes it as a form of violence against women,” Montero insisted.

The Ministry of Equality tried to include in the Law on sexual freedom that contracts on surrogacy in third countries be prosecuted, but there was no agreement due to complications due to the importance for the State of guaranteeing the rights of the child and not putting them in jeopardy. risk.

Along the same lines, the deputy spokesman for United We Can in the Lower House, Enrique Santiago, has shown a “clear position” against surrogacy and that “pregnancies can be bought and sold”, for which he has criticized the “commodification of women”.
